Picnic in a Vineyard in La Rioja
This is how you fall in love with Rioja. Not through wine lists or tasting rooms, but out in the open, surrounded by rolling vines, with a glass of cava in hand and something incredible cooking over a wood fire.
The Experience
We’ll start at a small, family-run winery that’s stayed independent for generations. You’ll meet the owners and tour their space, nothing flashy, just deep knowledge and pride. Then, a tasting. First, their barrel-aged white, then three elegant reds from single vineyard plots. You’ll taste the effect of slope, soil, and sun—how a few meters change everything.
From there, we head uphill. Literally.
At the top of a nearby hill, we’re greeted with a panoramic view of the Rioja wine region—endless rows of vines and the soft outlines of distant mountains. It’s here that your lunch begins, cava in hand, under the open sky.
Fire, Wine, and Slow Lunch
The chef is already at work. This is a wood-fire feast, country-style but thoughtful:
– Four small bites paired with crisp Rioja white
– Two open-fire mains (think lamb, chorizo, or local fish) paired with bold Rioja reds
– A simple, sweet dessert to finish, because you earned it
Everything is cooked on-site, eaten slowly, and paired to perfection.
Why It’s Worth It
This isn’t a picnic blanket and a sandwich, it’s full immersion in the region’s food and wine culture. The kind of lunch that shifts your idea of what makes a great meal. It’s intimate, unscripted, and full of the kind of moments you don’t plan but never forget.
