BASQUE FARMHOUSE FLAVORS
San Sebastian, Spain
Your guide will meet you at your hotel to start your day. We will invite you to the world of "Sagardoa": Basque Cider. While on this tour you will enjoy a walk around the apple orchards and you’ll learn about pollination, the fermentation process, presses, etc. by watching an audiovisual documentary which illustrates how natural Petritegi cider has evolved from the 18th century to the present day. After the short tour, you will taste the cider with some chorizo! We will then head to a private farmhouse, which is the home of an artisan ham producer. This farmhouse has been run by the same family since the 16th Century. In the hands of a member of the family, devoted to recovering the indigenous Basque pig, you will learn how those pigs are reared and understand the traditional role of these self-sufficient traditional Basque farms. These happy pigs are fed on green grass pasture, full of white and purple clover, hay and mountain herbs, nettle and Rumex roots and the fruit of the centuries-old native hardwoods. After exploring the picturesque grounds, we’ll then enjoy a very special homemade meal in the family’s dining room. The meal is prepared using only homemade products, including their ham and charcuterie, beef meat, wild mushroom and accompanied with plenty of Rioja wines or Cider. When we’re finished, your guide will start the drive back to your hotel.
