SKETCHING SPAIN

SEVILLE

Join us for a fantastic artistic and cultural experience in Seville! This is the perfect experience for any sketching enthusiast. Sketching Spain is a 4-day, intensive small group, intensive sketching retreat led by acclaimed artist Judith Cassel-Mamet and Spanish travel expert Danny Adler. With the inspirational backdrop of both urban and rural Spain, you will engage in Judith's famed artistic "Adventure Journal" approach, a no-fail process that aims to take away the road-blocks to creative expression. You will end the trip having seen and experienced Seville in a unique fashion, learning about the culture from Danny and your own observations made while recording your experience in your sketchbook. Absolutely no experience travel sketching necessary!

 ITINERARY

DAY 1

Our adventure begins in the magical, light-filled city of Seville! We will meet at our hotel where we will drop our luggage, then head out for an orientation and group lesson. Simple Sketch concepts for travel journaling will be presented with time to begin to fill some pages.  We will then enjoy a welcome lunch, Spanish style. In the afternoon Judith will introduce you to Scavenger Hunt Sketching and you will have time to sketch while wandering this fabulous location on your own. In the evening we will meet again for a fascinating flamenco show in an intimate venue than we will enjoy a light dinner of tapas together.

DAY 2

After a great breakfast at the hotel, head out as a group to a central plaza for a lesson on how to  capture the intricate Sevillano architecture. Judith will give you some valuable tricks for sketching this amazing city and its wonderful buildings. You will have some time to explore on your own, then midday, we will meet our guide for a walking city tour, covering the most important monuments of the city. You will visit Plaza Nueva, the City Hall, the Alcazares palace, the charming neighborhood of Santa Cruz, the old Tobacco factory, Plaza España, the Maria Luisa Parque, the San Telmo palace, the Gold Tower, the Bull Ring, the Guadalquivir river. We will then enjoy a  fantastic meal together overlooking the river. This evening will be on your own, Danny can suggest special tapas spots and other nightlife.

DAY 3

This is our "deep dive" sketch day. After breakfast, we will return to a few of the spots we discovered on our walking tour of Plaza España and record the mystery, poetry and beauty of this park. Lunch is on your own with lots of free time this afternoon to revisit locations that are calling you or exploring new areas. We will re-gather in the early evening to head to a roof top to toast the sunset and record the view from this unique vantage point. Your cocktail and light tapas are included.

DAY 4

We will pick up the pace a bit and drive to Cordoba after breakfast (1h 45min) where will go back in time to the glorious kingdom of Al-Andalus. Cordoba, situated on the legendary Guadalquivir River, boasts monuments to both its Islamic and Christian heritage. On arrival, Judith will host a brief lesson before we are met by our official monument guide to take us inside the famous Mezquita, a fine example of Islamic architecture that features intricate arches. You’ll see the contrast with the Gothic style of the city’s World Heritage-listed cathedral. Following the tour, you will have free time to sketch and explore. Walk along the narrow alleys of the former Jewish quarter and take a peek inside some of the typical patios, known as cordobeses. Take time to stop at one of the many traditional bars in the old town and reward your palate with Spanish delicacies such as flamenquin or salmorejo. At 4pm we will drive back to Seville. On arrival you will have some time to regroup and freshen up, before meeting again for our final group dinner where we will celebrate our art-focused, amazing time together in Seville.

With a small group (class is limited to 10 students) there will be plenty of individual instruction. Typical weather in October for Spain is dry, sunny and mild temperatures with averages ranging from 55° - 70° degrees; perfect! We have planned the itinerary with a "plan B" in mind in case of rain. We suggest students bring a small umbrella and
light raincoat just in case, but also include a sun hat.

What is the cancellation policy?
Your deposit and fees are non-refundable. We strongly suggest each student inquire about insurance before submitting their deposit for the trip to find out how time sensitive the transaction will be. Most students purchase travel insurance as soon as they purchase their airline tickets and/or when they make the final payment on the Sketching Spain trip.

(back to top of FAQs)

Should I purchase travel insurance?
Yes, Yes, Yes! You are strongly encouraged to purchase travel insurance since the tour fees are non-refundable. We recommend World Nomads. Get a quick quote here! Or here is a link to their website for more information.

(back to top of FAQs)

What additional fees should we expect?
Students will pay for meals not listed above and any additional transportation in San Sebastian that is not part of the tour. Additionally, Danny will suggest an amount to tip our coach driver and local guides . Any “
add-on” tours scheduled after our trip concludes will be an extra charge at the time of booking.

(back to top of FAQs)

How rigorous will the walking/touring be?
Generally, students travel at their own pace when we are not working in a large group for sketching or on a formal tour. Many of the sketching locations are easily accessed but on uneven ground. If walking is an issue, we suggest bringing a fold-up walking stick for stability and comfy shoes. You will have a portable chair to bring along for sketching.

(back to top of FAQs)

Any packing suggestions?
Travel light! Spain is fairly casual. A small, carry on suitcase will likely suffice. Comfy walking shoes and a light
daypack to hold your art materials are a must. We will be driving on some windy roads along the coast so please bring motion support (Dramamine, etc) if you know you have difficulty in this area. Tourists anywhere are an easy mark for pickpockets, so it is advised that you carry your wallet in a secure fashion.

Suggestions for keeping connected to folks at home
Please check with your individual phone carriers to determine the best plan for you. If you decide to purchase a SIM card for your phone when you arrive in Spain, Danny can help you install it. You will have access to WiFi in all of our hotels and apartments.

Other tech suggestions:

We will stay connected on the trip thru WhatsApp which is a free phone app we would like you to download before arrival. We will share our cell numbers with the group so we can confirm meeting times, etc. during the adventure
