Winter is coming, or if you're visiting in Spain, Summer is coming...and soon! Whether you're planning a vacation here or looking for places to explore in your own country, we have some medieval sites to consider. With the new, and final, Game of Thrones season premier happening in April, we are beyond excited to see all the scenic filming locations on screen. While many of our favorite scenes have been shot in places like a palace in Seville, at ancient Arab baths in Girona, and on a famous bridge in Cordoba, we're even more excited at the rumors of filming in locations such as the peninsula of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe in Bilbao, the capital of the Basque Country.
Brimming with scenic panoramas and seaside charm, these northern, coastal regions of Spain make for great filming locations as well as vacation destinations. The peninsula of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe in Bilbao has previously been seen in the series in season seven portraying the volcanic island of Dragonstone, the place where Daenerys was born. While the coming season is rumored to film a few scenes in this location, we can't forget the other seasons that have ventured plot lines into our country as well. Itzurun beach in Zumaia was used to film the Dragonstone scenes on the beach all the way back at the beginning of the series in episode one.
In addition to gorgeous coastal filming locations, ancient and historic areas found in Spain, such as Girona and Guadalajara, have also been used in the series. As stated in our previous Part 1 blog post about Game of Thrones, several seasons have included filming locations throughout the Catalan city of Griona. The Girona Cathedral represents the Great Sept of Baelor (spoiler alert!) which was later blown up by a vengeful Cersei Lannister. The popular tourist destination also appeared several other times, including in Bravoos and the final scene in King’s Landing.
Check out these and other Game of Thrones locations in Spain to get a double dose of beautiful sites and history mixed with everyone's favorite series!
