Surfing Portugal

Situated as the westernmost country of mainland Europe, Portugal is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south and by Spain to the north and east. Known to be an extremely coastal region, the country of Portugal has developed a knack for big waves and trendy surf spots.

Along the coast there is a huge variety of waves and swell size which as a result, makes an ideal surfing location for surfers of every ability. It is a good place to learn to surf with lots of places offering surf lessons and packages. The best time to try to learn how to surf in Portugal is coming soon in the summer months of June to September.

Matosinhos is Porto's most consistent surf spot. The gently sloping sand at this location takes some of the power out of the surf making it a suitable spot for all levels of surfer. Consistent waves in this location are key, as they are in many beaches such as Buarcos. Buarcos is recognised as one of the best Portugal surf beaches and a popular location for competitions. Further, in exploration of this coastline you will find several other great spots right around the hub.

If you are more advanced in your surfing capabilities and looking to catch some bigger waves, be sure to check out Nazaré, Portugal's premier big wave spot. It was here that some of the largest waves ever surfed, have been surfed. On the other hand, the Peniche region, a now famous location for being the host of the Rip Curl Pro WSL surf contest each October, is excellent for all including competitors and beginners too. Put your skills to the test here and maybe even compete with some of the local pros.
