The Cathedral of Saint Mary of Burgos:
A Catholic Church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, Burgos Cathedral resembles gothic style architecture and began construction in 1221. It is considered a World Heritage Site and is the only Spanish cathedral that has this distinction independently, without being joined to the historic center of a city. With a truly unmistakable profile, this will definitely be a stop you want to make when traveling through the north of Spain. There are many wonders inside, including precious artworks and sculptures, such as the Spanish-Flemish Gothic altarpiece by Gil de Siloé for the Chapel of Saint Anne.
The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Sea:
A Roman Catholic Cathedral in Seville, Andalusia is also a World Heritage Site. Completed in the early 16th century, the church embodies a gothic architectural style and is known to be quite large. Although the cathedral began its construction with the intent of becoming a mosque, it was rapidly Christianized after Seville's conquest by Ferdinand III. The interior has the longest nave of any cathedral in Spain and there are a total of fifteen doors amongst the four facades of the church!
The Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia:
Barcelona's Cathedral is another gothic style cathedral, located in the gothic district of Barcelona’s city center. The church pays tribute the city's patron saint, Saint Eulalia, and it is in the cathedral's crypt that her body is said to be entombed. Found in a unique part of the city, the Cathedral demands your attention as you can spot the spire and tips of the columns from far away. Contrary to popular belief, the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia is the official cathedral of Barcelona, not to be confused with the basilica of La Sagrada Familia.
The Primate Cathedral of Saint Mary of Toledo:
The cathedral of Toledo is one of the three 13th-century High Gothic cathedrals in Spain and is considered to be quite unique for many reasons. Ornate cloisters on the outside, and high vaulted ceilings complete with artwork and glass windows. Within the tall walls of this church, lies the altar mayor, meaning huge altar. This retable is an extremely monstrous piece standing high above the florid Gothic altarpiece.
